About Me

Hi Friends!

I'm a Vietnamese American who was born in Oklahoma and currently living in Austin, Texas.

Oklahoma?! Yes. Boomer Sooner baby.

My grandpa fought in the Vietnam War and when the US pulled out of Saigon, Vietnam considered him a traitor. After spending 8 years at a 're-education camp', he was ready to leave.

Shortly after the US signed the Refugee Act, my grandparents and parents moved to Oklahoma where they had a cousin in the laundromat industry.

Growing up, I was often at the laundromat. When I wasn't helping customers or cleaning, you'd find me over at the Mrs. Pacman machine honing my craft or at the vending machine looking for my next snack.

At an early age, my parents tried planting seeds for me to become a doctor. Classic.

I ended up taking the MCAT but never followed through with interviewing for medical schools. I dreamed of going to the NBA, but I think the universe misheard me because I ended up getting an MBA instead.

Although I didn't see myself providing direct patient care, I still planned on being an active participant in the healthcare industry. I learned that Baylor offered an MBA specializing in healthcare administration that was the perfect intersection between business and healthcare.

My parents were skeptical at first, but they've come to appreciate all the behind-the-scenes work that has to happen to enable healthcare as we know it.

During the MBA program, I spent a year working for HCA, the largest health system in the country. At HCA, I deep-dived into physician services and clinic operations.

Then I spent ~3 years in the consulting industry with GE Healthcare, where I was traveling Monday through Thursday. It was the strongest my immune system had ever been, thanks to the 120+ plus flights and 100+ plus hotel nights a year.

GE broadened my knowledge of the healthcare industry. I started off working on outpatient growth, then moved to inpatient cost reduction, and wound up in digital health when the pandemic started.

About 2 years ago, I joined a healthcare technology company that helps patients find the right care. At first, I spent time implementing Kyruus' software with health systems across the US.

Then we acquired another company that works with health plans, so I helped implement those products with insurance companies.

Now I work in Strategy and Operations at Kyruus where I led 2 office openings, one in Boston and one in Portland, and am currently working with our leaders to integrate another company we've acquired.

I'm not really sure what's next, but I do know that I have an entrepreneurial itch in me. I think it might come from growing up in a family-owned business.

While I'm figuring out what problem I'm uniquely equipped to solve for the world, I'm trying to soak in and learn as much as I can while having a little fun with good people along the way.

In the evenings, you'll find me hanging out with my wife Kelly, playing sports (lately it's been tennis, basketball, or pickleball), or spending quality time with friends and family.

Aside from hanging out, I really enjoy learning about the art & science of business, personal finance, and self-development.

I love meeting and getting to know people, so please feel free to reach out. My email is itsjohnpham@gmail.com

Let's learn and grow together!
